How to Plan a Surprise Trip Using Your Elf

Dec 2, 2024

Your Elf on the Shelf is typically known for its mischief, but what if this year, in the course of its mischief and magic, it revealed a surprise trip for your family? Whether it’s a winter wonderland escape or a tropical getaway, this blog will guide you through the steps of planning a surprise trip with your mischievous Elf leading the way. I’m here to help you make this holiday season one that your family (and Elf) will never forget!

Daily Clues

Probably one of the more exciting parts of planning this surprise is the clues you’ll leave along the way! Even more fun is watching your children’s faces as their minds work to piece together the clues, slowly realizing what they’re all leading to. Instead of your Elf’s typical shenanigans, rework his poses into clues about the destination. Here are some tips and examples of this.

Start with Simple Hints

Begin with vague, simple hints that spark curiosity without giving too much away. You don’t want them guessing too quickly! Determine first how many days you want to leave clues for, and that will help you gauge how small the hints should be. Here are some ideas!

  • If you’re visiting Disney, you may not want to start with Mickey ears. You may instead wish to start with your Elf eating a big, round, colorful lollipop, or a pineapple (references to Disney classics). If you are going on a cruise, maybe your Elf is desperately trying to put together an ocean themed puzzle.
  • The other option is to start out with a letter from the Elf explaining that they need to keep their eyes peeled over the next X amount of days for clues for their upcoming present.

Incorporate Interactive Clues

As the departure date approaches, make the clues more interactive. This may mean the clues have written instructions or not- that part is up to you! These clues not only build excitement but also help in preparing for the trip so you don’t fall behind in your very real packing and planning duties. Here’s an example!

Your elf could leave a message inside an empty suitcase that prompts your family to start packing certain items. Or, the Elf might be holding a packing check-list, or a note asking them to find the passports he just hid! Maybe your children are old enough to help the Elf put together a small first-aid kid (silly Elf- he got too many band aids stuck to him!)

Build Up to the Reveal

Gradually, the clues can become more obvious. You still aren’t giving it away, but the idea that you might be going on a trip should start becoming a little more clear. You’re painting a picture, and the shapes are finally coming together. By the time the big reveal comes, your family will be buzzing with anticipation! Here’s what this might look like.

  • Perhaps your Elf is riding a toy airplane or is trying to steal a piece of local currency from the destination. The Elf might lead them to a Captain’s hat for a cruise-related clue, or a beach towel for a beach-related trip.

Vacation Elements

The beauty of a surprise trip is in the details, and your Elf on the Shelf can help introduce some of the more special elements of your vacation. These elements aren’t here just to hint at the destination but also add a playful, imaginative touch to the lead-up. Here’s how you can add vacation-specific elements into your Elf’s antics:

Destination-Specific Items

Your hints should definitely be focused on the destination, a little different than past years Elf mischief. If you are traveling somewhere new, have your elf introduce items that are iconic to the location. If you are traveling to a familiar location, your elf can probably be a little more subtle.

  • For a beach trip, your Elf could be found lounging in a paper-towel made hammock or surrounded by seashells. For a mountain retreat, your Elf might be bundled up with a tiny scarf, holding a mini ski pole (candy canes work well!)

Activity Previews

Your elf can also give your family a sneak peek into the activities you’ll enjoy on the trip. These hints surround more of the details that might be more special to your family if you have inside jokes or memories you can play off of.

  • If you’re planning to visit a theme park, your Elf could be stepping in some sunscreen or be caught riding a toy roller coaster. If you’re going on a hiking trip, your Elf might leave a trail of pebbles or tiny footprints leading to a clue. If you’re further along in your clues, maybe a brochure or postcard will do the trick.

Cultural Tidbits

Introduce your family to the culture of the destination by having your Elf share tidbits about local customs, foods, or traditions. This hopefully allows your family to start doing a bit of their own research as they try to figure out what these clues could be leading them towards.

  • For example, your Elf could be playing with a small, culturally significant object that relates to the destination, like a Koala stuffie for Australia, or a ukulele for Hawaii. The Elf could be eating a local favorite snack like sushi, swiss chocolate or empanadas! Maybe the Elf’s notes now say “Hola” or “Bonjour” when he first greets the children.

The Big Reveal

After days of building excitement and anticipation, it’s finally time for the big reveal. You can do this reveal in a few different ways- I promise any option will make this moment truly magical.

Grand Unveiling

Consider creating a grand unveiling where your Elf presents the final clue in a very dramatic fashion.

  • Your Elf could be perched on top of a suitcase with a sign that reads, “Pack your bags—we’re going on an adventure!” Your Elf could set up a mini display with tickets, a globe, and a note announcing the destination. Wearing Mickey ears, or holding their custom T-Shirts should let them get the hint easily!

Interactive Scavenger Hunt

Take the reveal to the next level with an interactive scavenger hunt. Your Elf could leave their final clues around the house, leading your family to various locations until they discover the final pieces of the puzzle. You’ve been leaving clues for them throughout this whole experience- now it’s time to put it together!

  • Each clue in the scavenger hunt could reveal a different part of the trip. For example, you might use riddles to hint at various activities or destinations—such as a clue about the first activity, another about the second activity, and a final one leading to the ultimate destination. You could also hint at the mode of transportation or specific elements of the trip.
  • The final clue could lead to their packed suitcase alongside some flourishes, or a gift box containing all the travel essentials for the trip. Luggage tags, sunglasses, or activity books work well for this.

Personalized Touches

Add a personalized touch by incorporating holiday elements that are unique to your family. This makes the surprise even more special and tailored to your family’s traditions and memories.

  • For example, if your family has a favorite holiday song or movie, your Elf could incorporate that into the reveal.
